AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND SECTIO~ 19-68 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY <br />· OF PORTSMOIYI~, VIRgiNIA, 1961, PER~At~ING TO THE OBNERvANcE <br />OF SUNDAY AND THE WOPJ(' T~T _~_~Y BE DC~E O~ SUNDAY SO AS TO <br />CONFoP~ WITH ~'~rE STATE L~W ~ 'l~t~ SUBJECT. <br /> <br /> Be it ordained by the Cottucil of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virglnia~ that section 19-68 of the Code of the City of <br />Portsmouth, ¥irglnta~ 1961, be amended and reordatned to <br />read as follows: <br /> <br />Sec, 19-68,' Sunday Observance--Working or Transacting <br /> <br /> (a) On the flrst day of the week, commonly known and <br /> designated as Sunday, it shall be unlawful for any person .to <br /> engage in work, labor or business or to employ others <br />'to engage in work~ labor or business except in household <br /> or other work of necessity or charity. The exemption <br /> for works of necessity or charity contained in the pre- <br /> ceding sentence shall not be deemed to include selling <br /> at retail or wholesale or by auetion,~or offering or <br /> attempting to sell, on Sunday~ any of the following: <br /> ~ew~lry; precious and semi-precious stones; silverware; <br /> watches; clocks; luggage~ musioal inst~ments; recordings; <br /> toys (excluding items customarily sold as novelties and <br /> souvenirs); clothing and wearing apparel; clothing accessories; <br /> footwear; textile yard goods; housewares; china; kitchen- <br /> warel home. business, office or outdoor fur~iture, furnishings. <br /> and appliances; sporting goods (excluding sales or rental <br /> of bathing, boating, and fishing Paraphernalia and equlpment~ <br /> and sales or rental on the premises' where sports, athletic <br /> events or recreational facilities are located or conducted <br /> of equipment essential to the normal use or operation of <br /> such premises for the Purposes specified); pets, pet equip- <br /> ment or supplies; cameras and Photographic supplies <br /> (excluding film and flash bulbs); hardwarc~ ~ools~ Paints; <br /> building and lumber supplies and materials; motor vehicles~ <br /> trailers (excluding mobile homes)l farm implements; lawn <br /> and garden equil~uent and supplles;,farm produce (excluding <br /> sales of farm produce grown by the'seller and sold at road- <br /> aide stands or at the place where grown) or fresh, frozen <br /> or salt meats or seafood le without <br /> <br /> <br />
