.~N ORDIEANCE PROVIDING FOR T~{E CI~%SStFIC;~TiON OF E~LOI~ENT <br />AND A CO~{PENSATION PITON FOR FIP~E~EN .~ND POLICEMEN OF THE CITY <br /> <br />Be it ordained by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virgznia <br /> <br />Section 1. Employees Classified° <br /> <br /> On and after January 1, 1963. all Firemen and Policemen of the City of <br />Portsmouth, shall be classified accor~in~ ~o tlleir rank and their compensation <br />shall be fixed according ~o such rank heldo <br /> <br />Section ~. Rates of Compensation. <br /> <br /> The basic salary or compensation of each Fireman and Policeman un~l <br />otherwise changed by Ordinance, shall be according to the schedule of pay herein- <br />after set forth designated as Schedule A and made a part of this Ordinance excep~ <br />that men in thePo!ice Department requared no wear c~vilian clothes w~ll be allowed <br />an additional twen~F dollars ($~0.00) per month as a clothing allowance. <br /> <br />Section g. Application to P~e~en~F_ir~men and Poli~ <br /> <br />according ~o their classification as set forth in Schedule A of this Ordinance. <br />Fireman or Policem~n of the City who is at the effective date of this Ordinance <br />receiving less than the amount provided for in the schedule for his class of e~nplo}- <br />ment shall on and after January i, 19~, receive the amount se~ forth in ~he schedule: <br />Any Fireman or Policeman who is receivzng on the effective date of this Ordinance, <br />more than ~he ~ount he would be entitled to receive under said achednle, shall con- <br />5inns at the same salary until his years of service shall entitle him ~o an increase <br /> <br />Section 4° New Employees. <br /> <br /> Any person hereafter employed by ti~ City shall receive compensation during <br />Ene firs~ second, third and fourth years of his employment as set forth zn Schedule A <br />of this Ordinance. No employee shall receive compensation provided for in ~ne tenth <br />year until completion of ~en full years of ~ervice~ <br /> <br />Section 5. Promotions, <br /> <br /> For the purpose of computing compensation under Schedule A of this Ordinance <br />during the first year only of employment in a~]y higher rank, any fireman or policeman <br />promoted to a higher rank during the second, third or fourth year of his employment~ <br />shall be deemed to be in the first, second or third year respectively, of his employ- <br />men~, and any fireman or policeman promoted to a higher rank during or after the <br />fifth year of his employmen~ shall be deemed ~o be in the fourth year of his employ- <br /> <br />Section 6o Demotions° <br /> <br /> Any Fireman or Policeman who is demoted to a lower class shall recemve <br />compensation according to the rank in which he is placed. <br /> <br /> <br />
