~N ORDINANCE TO AMEND ~{E CODE OF THE CITY OF FORTSMOU~{, VIRGINIA, <br />1961, BY A}4ENDING SECTION 3-]6, PERTAINING TO /]{E REDEMPTION OF <br />IMPOUNDED DOGS ;~ND BY ADDING ~HERETO NEW SECTIONS NUMBERED 3-23~ <br />3-24, 3-25, 3-26, 3-27, 3-28, 3-29, 3-30, 3-31, 3-32 AND 3-33, <br />PROVIDING FOR THE DISPOSITION, QUAR~V~"FINE AND REPORT OF RABID <br />DOGS REQUIRING THE VACCINATION AND CERTIFICATION THEREOF OF ALL <br />DOGS OVER THE AGE OF FOUR MONTHS, PROVIDING FOR TIIE IMPOUNDING <br />OF UNVACCINATED DOGS, AND PROVIDING PENALTIES FOR THE VIOLATION <br />OF SUCH SECTIONS, <br /> <br /> ge ~t ordained by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, that the Code of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, <br />1961, be amended by amending section 3-16 thereof and by adding <br />thereto new sections numbered 3-23, 3-24, 3-25, 3-26, 3-27, 3-28, <br />5-29~ 3-30. $-31, 3-32 and 3-33, such amended, and new sections <br />to read as follows: <br /> <br />Sec. 3-16. Same - Redempz~on. <br /> <br /> Every dog impounded as provided in section 3-15 <br />shall be penned for five days from the lime of capture, <br />during which time it may be redeemed by the owner by <br />paying to the attendant at the dog pound the sum of <br />three dollars for the first day and one dollar for <br />each additional day, or any part thereof, to cover <br />the cosg of maintaining a pen for such dog and of the <br />care and keep of such dog, and by exhibiting to the <br />person in charge of the dog pound~ the receipt for <br />the tax required to be paid by state law. All such <br />impounding foes shall be paid over to the city <br />treasurer monthly, <br /> <br />ARTICLE IV~ RABIES CONTROL <br /> <br />Sec. 3-23. Disposition of dogs known to have rabies. <br /> <br /> It shall be the duty of any person owning or <br />having custody of any dog known to have rabies to at <br />once cause such animal to be killed and the body to be <br />buried or burned. In the event of the failure of the <br />o~mer or person having custody of such dog to cause <br />such animal to be killed, it shall be the duty of the <br />police, upon request from the director of public <br /> <br /> <br />
