AN ORDINANCE PROViDiNG FOI~ THE CLASSIFICATION OF EMPLOYMENT <br />AND A COMPENSATION PLAN FOR EI~PLOYEES OF THE C~TY <br /> <br /> Be it o~dmined by the Council of the City of Portsmouth~ Virginia: <br /> Section 1. Employees ClasaifiedD <br /> <br /> On and after September 1, lSS4~ all employees of the City of Portsmouth <br /> shall be classified according to the kind and type of work performed by them, and <br /> <br /> their compensation shall be fixed according ro such classification. <br /> Section 2, Rates of Compensation~ <br /> <br /> The basic salary or compensation of each employee until otherwise <br />changed by ordinance shall be according ~o the Basic Pay Schedule, hereinafter <br /> <br />referred to as the schedule, and which is a part of this ordinsnCeo <br /> Section S. Application to Present Employees. <br /> <br /> All employees of the City ~hall receive compensation according to <br /> <br />their classification as set forth in the schedule. Any employee of the City who <br />is at ~he effective date of this ordinance receiving less than the amount provided <br />for in the schedule for his range of employment, shall, beginning with the first <br />day of the first pay period commencing on or after September 1~ 1964~ as appropriate, <br />and thereafter, receive the amount set forth in the schedule. Any employee who is <br />receiving more on the effective date of this ordinance than the amount he would be <br />entitled to receive under the schedule~ shall continue at the same salary until his <br />years of service shall entitle him to an Increase in compensation. <br /> <br /> Section 4. New Employees, Promotions and Pay Increases. <br /> <br /> The several cla~ssificstions of employment shall be divided into pay <br />ranges as set forth in the schedule° Unless otherwise provided herein, an employee <br />shall receive the compensation se~ forth in the schedule under steps 1, Z and 3 <br />during the first, second and third years~ respectively, of his employment in that <br /> <br /> <br />
