AN ORDINANCE PROVIDING FOR THE CLASSIFICATION OF EMPLOYMENT AND <br /> A COMPENSATION PLAN FOR EMPLOYEES OF THE CITY~ <br /> <br /> Be it ordained by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia: <br /> Section 1o Employees Classified° <br /> <br /> On and after January 1, 1966, all employees of the City of Portsmouth shall <br /> be classified according to the kind and type of work performed by them, and their <br /> <br /> compensation shall be fixed according to such classification. <br /> Section 2. Rates of Compensation. <br /> <br /> The basic salary or compensatibn of each employee until otherwise changed <br /> by ordinance shall be according to the Basic Pay Schedule, hereinafter referred to <br /> <br /> as the schedule, and which is a part of this ordinance. <br /> Section 3. Application to Present Employees. <br /> <br /> All employees of the City shall receive compensation according to their <br />classification as set forth in the schedule° Any employee of the City who is at <br />the effective date of thi's ordinance receiving less than the amount provided for in <br />the schedule for his range of employment, shall, beginning with the first day of <br />the first pay period commencing on or after January 1, 1966, as appropriate~ and <br />thereafter, receive the amount set forth in the schedule. Any employee who is <br />receiving more on the effective date of this ordinance than the amount he would be <br />entitled to receive under the schedule, shall continue at the same salary until his <br /> <br />years of service shall entitle him to an increase in compensation. <br /> Section 4o New Employees, Promotions and Pay Increases. <br /> <br /> The several classifications of employment shall be divided into pay ranges <br />as set forth in the schedule. Unless otherwise provided herein, an employee shall <br />receive the compensation set forth in the schedule under steps 1, 2 and 3 during <br />the first, second and third years, respectively, of his employment in that range <br />automatically. Unless otherwise provided herein, an employee shall receive the <br />compensation set forth in the schedule under steps 4, 7and 10 upon commencement <br /> <br /> <br />
