Sec. 18-248. Exhaust systam in~ good working order requi~ed. (a) No person shall drive ar, d no o~ner of a motor vehicle shall pe~r~t or allow the operation of any owned ~fe~icle upon a highway unless such motor veb~cle is equipped with mn ez~aust system of a type installed as sta~dard factory equipment, or co,arable to that designed for use upon the particular vehicle as sts,ndard factory equipm~nt, in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or un- usual noise, annoyimg smoke and escape of excessive gas, ste~n or oil. An exhaust system shall not be deemed to prevent excessive or unusual noise if it permits or all~:~s the escape of noise ~n excess of that per- mitted by the standard factory equipment exhaus5 system of private pas- senger m~tor ve~hicles or trucks of sts~n~ard ~ake. (b) ~ne term "exhaust system" as used in this section, means all the pa_~s of a =otor vehicle through w_hich the emhaust passes after leaving the engine block. (c) C~s~m~ered pipes and tttrbosupercRargers shsll not be dee~ e~ to be .an effective mu_~flmng me~mce to prevent excessive .or unusual nomse as req~ed in subsection (a). Sec. 18-253.- Illegal possession or sale of unapproved equi~ent. It shall be unlawful for ar~ person tp possess with intent to sell or o~fer for sale, either separately or as a part of the equipment of a motor veh~c!e~ or to use or have as equipment upon a motor vehicle operated on a ~b~i~ay ~ny lighting, device,_. _ wakening device~ signal .devicq~s~fety ~lass_ or other equipment on ~inich approval is hereby requJ_~ed or s~ny part or Darts tencccng to chmn~e or smcer the operation of SUCh devm~e~ glass or other equip- merit unless of a t)?e that has been sub~mitted to and approved by the Super- intendent, or meets or exceeds ~ ~ - ' ~he somadards and specifications of the Socme~y of Automotive Eng~neers~ the ~nericmn National Standards Institute~ Incoroo2--- rated or the federal Department of Trsm, sportation, Sec. 18-255.1. Ss~Uety 1~ belts or a com~inatiom of lap belts and shoulder s'~raps or hax~esses to be ~nstalled in certain motor veZnicles. (a) No motor vehicle registered in this State designed ar~ iicm~ed pr~na~ily for private passenger vehiculs_~ transportation on the public highways ~ and n~mufactured for the year rlneteen hundred sixty-three or for smbsequent years~ shall be operated on the high~ys of this State t~nless the front seats thereof be equipped with adult safety lad belts or & combination of lap belts ~nd shoulder straps or harnesses of a t~e or types approved by the Superintendent.
