Advancement within~ade. <br /> <br /> (a) All increases in compensatiqn for persons classified <br />under Section 3 hereof~ shall be granted by thecity Manager on recom- <br />mendation of the employee's department head on the basis of exceptional <br />merit. Such increases shall be granted in sequence by advancing the <br />~loyee to the next step in grade unless otherwise expressly authorized <br />bY the CityManager. Mere lengthof service sb~ll not~entitle suchan <br />employee to an advancement to the next step in his grade. ' <br /> <br /> (b) All increases in compensation for.persons classified <br />under Section 4 hereof shall be on ~Uann~ual basis ~ud as provided in <br />this ordinance. <br /> <br />Section 8. Application to present employees. <br /> <br /> All employees of the City, unless otherwise provided for,~ <br />sh~]l receive compensation ~ccording to their classification and as <br />provided in this ordinance. <br /> <br />Section 9. New employees. <br /> <br />.'~ Any person employed on and.after July 1, 1970, shall receive <br />corspensation according to the classificationin~which he is placed; <br />except that persons employed on or after that date and classified under <br />Section ~ of this ordinance shallbe placed in the probation step for <br />his grade for a period of not less ths_n t~o weeks nor more than six <br />months, but ne person shall serve ina probation step for more than six <br />months. <br /> <br />Section 10. Promotions. <br /> <br /> Upon promotdon to a higher pay grade, the employee will be <br />placed in the lowest step which w~ll afford him an increase in pay. <br /> <br />Section 11.
