Ak~ ORDIi~ANCE TO A~MEND THE ZOI~iNG ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF PORTS- <br />MOUTH, VIRGINIA, 1961, BY 'A~IE~DtNG ARTICLE 9, SECTIONS 9-1 THROUGH <br />9-28 THEREOF, PERTAINING TO THE HISTORIC DISTRICT ZONE, AND BY <br />A~4ElqDiI.~G TiIAT CERTAI!~ I~P ENTITLED "HISTORIC DISTRICT," PERTAINING <br />TO THE BOUNDARIES QF SAID HISTORIC DISTRICT ZONE. <br /> <br /> Be it ordained by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia: <br /> <br /> t.. ±b~t the ~on~.ng Ordinance of the .City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, 1961, be amended by amending the Historic District map <br />in the manner as shown on that certain map entitled ':Historlc <br />District, Zoning Map (2A) ..." dated April 7, 1971 and prepared <br />by the Department of mngtneer_ng of the City of Portsmouth. <br /> <br /> 2. That the Zoning Ordinance of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, 1961~ be amended by amending Article 9, Sections 9-1 <br />through 9-28 to read as folloQs: <br /> <br />ARTICLE 9 HISTORIC DISTRICT <br /> <br />Section 9-1. Purposes and Objectives. <br /> <br /> The purposes and objectives of ~his article are declared <br />to be the promotion and preservation of the general welfare of the <br />inhabitants of the city, including, but not limited to, the promotion <br />and preservation of its educational~ cultural and economic interests, <br />opportunities and advantages, through: <br /> <br /> (a) the preservation and protection of historic build- <br />ings, s~ <br /> ~rucnures, places and areas of historic interest; <br /> <br /> (b) the preservation, protection and maintenance of such <br />buildings, structures, places and areas as landmarks in the history <br />of the colony and Commonwealth of Virginia and the Town and City of <br />Portsmouth commemorative of the events, circumstances ekd arch- <br />itecture associated therewith, and as tangible reminders of the <br />colony and Conumonweat~ of Virginia and the Town and City of Ports- <br />mouth in the early days of their settlement and development; <br /> <br /> (c) the development and maintenance of appropriate <br />settings and enviroment for suck buildings, structures, places <br />and areas; <br /> <br /> (d) the regulation and control of construction of new <br />buildings and Structures to preserve and protect such areas of <br />historical interest and the setting 'and environment found or pre- <br /> erve~ tneremn; and <br /> <br />(e) the promotion, development and preservation of the <br /> <br /> <br />
