AN ORDINANCE TO AM-END THE CODE OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, VIR- <br />GINIA, 1961, BY AMENDING SECTIONS 3-23, 3-24, 3-25, 3-26 AND <br />3-27 THEREOF PERTAINING TO THE CONTROL OF RABIES. <br /> <br /> Be it ordained by the Council of the City of Ports- <br />mouth, Virginia: <br /> <br /> 1. That the Code of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, <br />1961, be amended and reordaine~ to read as follows: <br /> <br />Sec. 3-23. Disposition of rabid animals. <br /> <br /> It shall be the duty of any person owning or having <br />custody of any animal known to have rabies at once to cause <br />such animal to be killed and the body to be buried or burned. <br />In the event of the failure of the owner or person having <br />custody of such animal to cause such animal to be killed, it <br />shall be the duty of the game warden upon request from the <br />director of public health, to cause such animal to be killed <br />as aforesaid. <br /> <br />Sec. 3-24. Quarantine of animals - When required. <br /> <br /> It shall be the duty of the owner or person having <br />custody of any animal who has been bitten by another animal <br />known to have rabies to quarantine such bitten animal in the <br />manner set forth in this article for a period of six months <br />unless sooner released by consent of the director of public <br />health. <br /> <br /> It shall be the duty of the owner or person having <br />custody of any animal otherwise suspected of having rabies to <br />quarantine such animal as hereinafter set forth for a period <br />of two weeks unless sooner released by consent of ths director <br />of public health. <br /> <br />Sec. 3-25. What constitutes quarantine. <br /> <br /> Quarantine, as used in this article, shall mean the <br />keeping of any animal under such conditions of reasonable se- <br />curity and confinement as may be determined by the director of <br />public health to be necessary or desirable in the interest of <br />public health and safety. In the discretion of the director <br />of public health r such quarantine may be effected on the premises <br />of the owner or person having custody of the animal to be quaran- <br />tined or by delivery to an approved veterinarian, kennel or pound, <br />which shall be at the cost and expense of the owner or person <br />having custody of such animal.
