AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND THE CODE OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, VIR- <br />GINIA, 1961 BY AMENDING SECTION 2-36 THEREOF PERTAINING TO <br />LEGAL HOLIDAYS FOR CITY EMPLOYEES. <br /> <br /> BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Ports- <br />mouth, Virginia: <br /> <br /> 1. That Section 2-36 of the Code of the City of Ports- <br />mouth, Virginia, 1961 be amended and reordained to read as follows: <br /> <br />Section 2-36. Legal Holidays - generally. <br /> <br /> The following days are designated as legal holidays for <br />all employees of the City, except policemen and firefighters and <br />those engaged in such employment as necessarily require their <br />daily services, and for all state officers performing duties <br />for the City: The first day of January (New Years Day), the <br />third Monday in February (George Washington Day), the last Mon- <br />day in May (Memorial Day), the fourth day of July (Independence <br />Day), the first Monday in September (Labor Day), the fourth <br />Monday in October (Veterans Day), the fourth Thursday in Nov- <br />ember (Thanksgiving Day) and the twenty-fifth day of December <br />(Christmas Day); provided however, that whenever any of the <br />aforesaid holidays shall fall on a Saturday, they shall be <br />observed on the preceeding Friday, and whenever they shall <br />fall on a Sunday, they shall be observed on the following <br />Monday. <br /> <br /> No other holidays shall be observed by either state <br />employees partly engaged in city work or by city employees, <br />except when special occassions are authorized by the City Manager. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Vir- <br />ginia, at a meeting held on August 22, 1972. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
