1977-56 AN ORDINANCE TO AMEL~ THE CODE OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, 1973, BY AM~qDING SECTION 35-224 [e) AND SECTION 35-226, PERTAINING TO T~E A~DUNT OF EX~PTION OF REAL ESTATE TAXES FOR C~TAIN ELDERLY PEOPLE; k%~/V/NG CERTAIN QUALIFICATION REQUt~ FR~ THE E~'~'~T/VE DATE OF THIS ORDINANCE UNTIL JUNE 15~ 1977. BE IT ORDAIneD by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginma: 1. That Section 35-224(e) of the Code of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, 1973, be amended to read as follows: (e) The ~otal cc~bined incc~e frc~n all sources for the m~ mediately preceding calendar year of the owner or ~ners clainf~g tax exemption and of the owner or ~ner's relatives or other household ~member living in the subject d~welling shall not exceed Seven ~nousand, Five Hundred and 00/100 ($7,5CO.) Dollars providing the first Twe~nty- Five Hundred_ and 00/100 ($2,500.) Dollars of income~ of each relative other than spouse or other household member of the ~ner or owners who is living in the ~welling shall not be included in such total. 2. That Section 35-226 of the Code of t/le City of Portsmouth, Virginia, 1973, be amended to read as follows: Section 35-226. Amount of exemption. The person or persons qualifying for and claiming exemption shall have exempted that percentage of the real estate tax levied on the qualifyLng dwellLng as set forth in the following schedule: Total Inccme All Sources $ O to $2,000.00 100% $2,001.00 %0 $2,500.00 90% $2,501.00 to $3,000.00 80% $3,001.00 to $3,500.00 70% $3,501.00 to $4,000.00 60% $4 ~OO1. OO to $4 ~ 500.00 50% $4,501.00 to $5,000.00 40% $5,001.O0 to $5,500.00 30%0 $5,501. OO to $7,500. O0 20% 3. The ~ limitations for qualifying under ~35-225 and S35-225,1 will not be applicable frcm the date this ordinance ~s adopted until June 15, 1977. Thereafter, suc2n sections will again be effective. 4. This ordinance shall be effective frcm the date of its adoption. Adopted by the Council of the City of Port~uth, V~rginia, at a meeting held ~y 31, 1977. City Clerk
