AN ORDINANCE TO ~f~D THE CODE OF THE CIT~ OF PORTS~_QUTH, VIRGINIA, BY ADDliNG ARTICLE XI~I TO CHAi~±'~ 23 THEREOF, PERTAINING TO V~tCLV~ OF EXCESSIVE SIZE ~%X~D WEIGHT. BE IT ORDAINED by t~he Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia: (t) That Chapter 23 of the Cede of the Cit~, of Portsmouth, Virgiriia, 1973, be amended by adding thereo, Article XVI to read as follows.- ARTICLE XVI: vehicles of excessive size and weight. Section 23-520. Width of vehicles and exceptions as to size. ~J~ v~icle, including any load thereon, but excluding the require~ mirror~ mhall exc~ed a total ~utside width as follows: (a) Pass~ger bus operated in ~_he City - 102 inches; (b) Oe_h~ vel~icles - 96 inches. Section 23-521. Height of vehicles; damage to overhead obstruction. (a) ~) No vehicle l~nladen or with load shall exceed a heig.h3t of 13 feet 6 inches; ~ contained in ~his section shall be construed to re~qre the City to provide verticle clearances of overhead bridges ~r structures in excess of 12 feet 6 inches or to make any chants in ~/ae verticle clearances of existing overhead bridges or st~ctureS crossing streets or highways. The operator or ore, er of vehicles ~operating on the streets or highways shall he held financially responsible for damage to overhead bridges or structures t~hat result frc~ collisions therewith. Section 23-522. Size limitations inapplicable to firefighting e~ipmer~ ~d farm machinery. The limitations upon the size of vehicles prescribed in this Article shall not apply to farm machinery other than farm tractors when such farm machinery is temporarily propelled or moved upon the highway nor to f~- fightLng equipment of any city or tc~ or firefigh~ing cc~pany or ~ssocia%ion. Section 23-523. Length of vehicles; special permits. NO rotor va%icle extending in l~ngth of forty (40) feet shall be operated on any ~high~ay in the city; providing, however, the City ~nna~er or his designee, may, by general or special order, ~ch may be am~nd~ or recLnded fr~ time to time~ permit the operation of passager buses in excess of 35 feet but not ~ceeding 40 feet on certain highways ~nd par~s ~hereof desig?~ated by the City ~nager. ~ne actual length of any cc~bi- nation of vehicles coupled ~oge~her Lncluding any load thereon~ sha~ not exceed a total of 55 feet; and no tolerance shall he allowed herein; pro- vided ~ti~er, however, that the City [~nager or his designee in cases of ~rgenq~ ~y issue a special permi~ for combinations in excess of 55 feet including any load thereon, where the ob[ ect or objects t~ be carried ce~n~not be moved otherwise; provided ft~rther, ~/~t ve~c!es
