WHEREAS. Norfolk and Western Railway Company and The Virginian <br />Railway Company have filed their joint applications with the Interstate <br />Commerce Commission for authority to merge the latter into the former; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, large numbers of employees of the aforesaid railroads reside <br />within the City of Portsmouth, although there are at present no physical <br />properties of either of said railroads within the present corporate limits; <br />and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the proposed merger will, in the opinion of this Council, <br />adversely affect the continued operation of Norfolk and Portsmouth Belt Line <br />Railroad Company, which railroad is a vital link in the system of railroad <br />transportation serving the City of Portsmouth and the harbor of Hampton Roads. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE. BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, that the proposed merger of Norfolk and Western Railway Company <br />and The Virginian Railway Company would be detrimental to the interests of <br />the citizens of this City and that this Council opposes and objects to such <br />merger. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Clerk is directed to forward a <br />certified copy of these resolutions to the Interstate Conmmerce Commission <br />and that the City Attorney is authorized and directed to take the necessary <br />action to make the City of Portsmouth a party to the pending proceedings and <br />thereafter, by oral argument or written brief, state the position of the <br />City of Portsmouth at the conclusion of the proceedings. <br /> <br /> I hereby certify that the foregoing is a true and correct copy of <br />resolutions adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, at <br />a regular meeting held on June 9, 1959. <br /> <br />at <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
