A RESOLUTION URGING THE U. S. GOVERNMENT AND THE GENERAL SERVICES <br />ADMINISTRATION TO GIVE FAVORABLE CONSIDERATION TO THE TRANSFER OF <br />THE PROPERTY FORMERLY KNOWN AS U. S. MARINE CORPS SUPPLY FORWARDING <br />ANNEX TO A NON-PROFIT CORPORATION, AGENCY OR AUTHORITY IN THE TIDE- <br />WATER AREA WITH A VIEW TO THE DEVELOPMENT AND USE THEREOF FOR IN- <br />DUSTRIAL PURPOSES. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the United States Government owns the property containing about <br />972 acres, with certain buildings and improvements thereon, formerly known as <br />U. S. Marlne Corps Supply Forwarding Annex, located 12.5 miles northwest of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia, at the junction of the James and Nansemond Rivers, in <br />Nansemond County, Virginia; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, a determination has been made that this property is no longer <br />required for use by the Government and is available for disposition in accordance <br />with the provisions of the Federal Property and Administrative Service Act of 1949, <br />as amended; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, that property is highly suitable for industrial development and <br />use, by reason of the location thereof said the improvements thereon; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, in order to promote the welfare and economy of the Tidewater <br />area, there is an urgent need for the acquisition of that property by an agency <br />which will make it available for industrial development and use, on reasonable <br />terms; <br /> <br /> THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Portsmou-th, Vir- <br />ginia, does hereby urge the United States Government and the General Services Ad- <br />ministration to give favorable consideration to the transfer of said property to <br />a non-profit corporation, agency or authority in the Tidewater area, with a view <br />to the development and use thereof for industrial purposes; and <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be sent to Virginia's <br />Senators and the Congressmen representing the Tidewater area, with the request that <br />they take all actions they properly can in furtherance of the above stated objec- <br />tives. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, at a meeting <br />held on July 28, 1959. <br /> <br />Certified a true copy: <br /> <br />____________________________ <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
