WHEREAS, section 16-14 of the Code of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, <br /> <br />1951, as amended, provides only for a cash fare of twenty cents on intraurban <br /> <br />buses operated in the City; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Portsmouth Transit Company and numerous mercantile establishments <br /> <br />of the City are desirous of conducting a ninety-day test of an arrangment whereby <br /> <br />tokens will be sold by the Transit Company to any person, firm or corporation <br /> <br />licensed to do a retail business in the City at the rate of fifteen cents per token <br /> <br />in lots of not less than one hundred tokens; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, such arrangement will encourage and promote patronage of Portsmouth <br /> <br />businesses and reduce the number of automobiles in the downtown area during the <br /> <br />Christmas season; <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br /> <br />Virginia, that Portsmouth Transit Company is hereby authorized to sell tokens to <br /> <br />any person, firm or corporation licensed to do a retail business in said City at <br /> <br />the rate of fifteen cents per token in lots of not less than one hundred tokens, such <br /> <br />authorization to expire on February 25, 1959.
