RE S OLU T I ON <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, it is apparent to the Council of the City of <br />Portsmouth that the growth of eastern Virginia, and especially <br />the area in and surrounding the Cities of Norfolk and Portsmouth, <br />has and wilt in the future produce ever increasing traffic problems <br />which will require the development of new and more adequate traffic <br />arteries such as the second Elizabeth River Tunnel now being con- <br />structed <br /> <br /> AND WHEREAS, the construction of said second Elizabeth <br />River Tunnel will in itself develop new Traffic in the area of the <br />Western Branch of said Elizabeth River to the end that in the <br />opinion of this Council, a replacement of the now old and inadequate <br />bridge across sa~d Elizabeth River from Port Norfolk to West Norfolk <br />will be urgently needed at or shortly following the opening of said <br />second Tunnel facility; <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT P~ESOLVED. that in the opinion of this <br />Council a concerted effort should be made by it and the governing bodies <br />of the Elizabeth River Community and by the Virginia Department of High- <br />ways for the prompt surveying, planning and constructing of az~ improved, <br />modern bridge on State Route #654 at or near the mouth of the western <br />branch of the Elizabeth River to the end that ever increasing vehicular <br />traffic in this ~rea be properly served, with the resulting beneficial <br />development and economic well being of the whole community ~nd its <br /> <br /> RESOLVED FURTHER that a copy of this Resolution be Transmitted <br />forthwith to the State Highway Commission, the Board of Supervisors of <br />~ae County of Norf~k and the City Council of the City of Norfolk with <br />the request that they likewise consider the course of action here <br />presented. <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
