W~EREAS. the resignation of Emily N. Spong from the School Board <br /> <br />of the City of Portsmouth has been accepted with regret by the Council <br />of the City of Portsmouth; and <br /> <br /> WHERFAS, Emily N. Spong was appointed to the School Board in 1937. <br />was elected Vice Chairman of the School Board in 1945, and has served <br />as Chairman of the School Board since 1947, during which time the school <br />system has grom~ from an enrollment of less than eight thousand to more <br />Than Twenty-three thousand pupils, requiring construction of twenty new <br />school buildings and additions To existing buildings at a cost of more <br />than thirteen million dollars; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Emily N, Spong, among her other civic accomplishments and <br />awards, was named Portsmouth's Woman of the Year for 1950 and Outstanding <br />School Board Member of the State of Virginia for the year 1951. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Ports- <br />mouth, Virginia, that the appreciation of the citizens of this City for <br />the long and valuable service rendered by Emily No Spong to the school <br />system of this City be expressed and conveyed to the said Emily N. Spong0 <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of these resolutions be spread <br />upon the minutes of the City Council, and a copy be presented to the said <br />Emily N. Spong as a token of the esteem in which she is held by the people <br />of this city. <br /> <br /> Adopted at a meeting of City Council held on June 28, 1960. <br /> <br /> Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
