WHEREAS, it is understood that the General Services Administration <br />has declared the former post o£fice building iocated au Court and Kine <br />Streets, Portsmouthj Virginia, to be surplus to the Federal Government, it <br />is further understood that the City of Portsmouth may obtain this facility <br />To be used ae a public library, and it is also understood that this ~rans- <br />fer may be made under Public Law 152, Section 205 (k) (1), which ie imple- <br />mented by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, facilities presently available for public library pur- <br />poses in this City are grossly inadequate and this Council desires to pro- <br />vide the best possible library facilities in keeping with the financial <br />ability of the City so To do; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS~ should the aforesaid building be made available to the City <br />of Portsmouth under the above cited public law, the City is financially able <br />and willing to renovate the same and thereafter operate it as a public library° <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT P~SOLVED by the Council of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia, that: <br /> <br />(a) there is a need and desire that the former post office building <br />in this City be acquired by the City for the purpose of operating <br />the same as a public library. <br /> <br />(b) the City is financially able and willing to accept the con- <br />veyance of said property upon the terms and conditions required by <br />taw, and ~o renovate and thereafter operate the same as a public <br />library° <br /> <br />(c) the City Nanager is authorized and directed to make applica- <br />tion for transfer of said property, to take all necessary steps to <br />secure transfer of the said property, and ~o accept and record the <br />deed of conveyance thereof with such conditions and covenants therein <br />contained as are required by law. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia a~ a <br />meeting held on May 23, 1961. <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
