~*~5tEREAS the State Highway Department is in the process of <br /> <br />' ' 'constructing Interstate.Route 264 from Bowers Hill co downtown Portsmouth <br /> and has in fact, completed construction of that portioJ from Bowers Hill <br /> to Des Moines Avenue in the City of Portsmouth;'and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the traffic at the intersection of Route 58 with Route <br /> 337 at Alexander's Corner is highly congested so as to constitute a <br /> safety hazard to the motoring public; and <br /> <br /> ~C4EREAS, the anticipated commercial and residential development <br /> west of Alexander's Corner will aggravate the traffic problem at ~hat <br /> intersection; and <br /> <br /> ~rlEREAS, the construction of an interchange with Interstate <br /> Route 264 where it crosses Greenwood Drive in the City of Portsnmutn would <br /> help alleviate the traffic problem at Alexander's Corner by attracting <br /> approximately 6,300 vehicles daily according to a traffic survey conducted <br /> by the Traffic Engineer of the City of Portsmouth; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the construction of said interchange would contribute <br /> to the convenience ~d safety of the motoring public. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br /> Portsmouth, Virginia, ~hat the State Highway Depar;ment ~e and the same <br /> hereby is requested to survey and design an interchange for Interstate <br /> Route ~64 at Greenwood Drive in the City of Portsmouth under the federal <br /> Urban aid progrmm. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City of Portsmouth hereby <br /> declares that it is willing ~o contribute its share of the cost under the <br /> federal urban aid program. <br /> <br /> <br />
