WHE~F~S, Portsraouth is the most densely populated C~y in Vi~a; <br /> <br /> ~WHEREAS, Portsmouth has no institution of higher learning located <br />wit~hin its bour~ries; and <br /> <br /> WH~P~S, Portamouth owns its own water systa~ amd se~er system; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, there is a large number of potential college students in <br />Portsmouth, the western part of Chesapeake, Nansemond O~nty, and Sure'folk; <br /> <br /> W~P~AS, mauy of these potential college stud~uts ar~ deterred from <br />going to the state-supported colleges located within r~asonS~le cm~uutirg <br />dista~e of their homes because of the increased financial b~u~den they <br />would have to bear since the only convenient routes to these institutior~ <br />would require them to utilize certain kignws~, toll fae1]~ties; ~ <br /> <br /> ~qEREAS, the Council of the City of Port~aouth is of the opir~on <br /> that these potential college students should be afforded the opportunity <br /> to attend au institution of ~dgher learning without undue finaucial burden; <br /> <br /> NO~, THEBEFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council o£ the City of <br /> Porta~outh, Virginia, that this council hereby-offers Portsmouth ~s a site <br /> for a cmamunity college ar~l strongly urges the Department of Community <br /> Colleges to select Portamouth as a site for a cc~munity college. <br /> <br /> BE tT FURTHER RESOLVE~, that the City of Portsmouth pledges itself <br /> to secure the necesaa~y land and to provide the neces~ paz~, roads <br /> and utilities if Port~mouth is selected as' a site for a c~a~u~ity coll~ge. <br /> <br /> Adopted unar~mously by the Council of the City off Portsmouth, <br /> Vir~ioia, at a meetinE held September t, 1966, ~ <br /> <br /> Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
