OF Tile COASTAL~'~'~'qS~S..~_~,~v S~ST~_,v ~w. .z_~z,~,S it has been proposed that a coastal expressway system be established linking various s~a~es along the Atlantic seaboard; and WHEREAS, it has been proposed ~o incorporate U. S. Route 17 into the Virginia segment of such coastal expressway eye=em, and Lnnz~sAS, George '[{ashington nzghway is presently de- signated as U. S. Route 17; and ,.I~,~.~o, it has been p~oposec, to remove from George ~asnmngton ~zg~way its designation as U. S. ~oute 17; NON, ~'~ ..... ~t ..... Om~, BE I7 RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouthr Virginia: h That it as U. S. Route segmen~ of the of U. S. Route strongly favors retaining George ?fashington Highway 17 and further designating it as Virginia's coastal expressway system and opposes the change 17 to any other road for the following reasons: (a) it will create confuszon among tourists, shippers and other travelers. (b) It will seriously damage the ' ' ~ ouslnes~es presently located along U. S. Route 17 as i~ now exists. (c) It will necessitate a complete re-exam- znation and re-evaluation of existing high- way plans and priorities for the Tidewater area. (d) it will requmre the cooperation of agencies outside the jurisdiction of Virgznma BE iT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be forwarded ~o each member of the State [[ighway Commission and ~o the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce.
