A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE INTEREST OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CiTY <br />OF PORTSMOUTH IN OBTAINING PROPERTY TO BE VACATED BY THE UNITED <br />STATES COAST GUARD (ELIZABETH RiVER~ SOUTHERN BP=ANCH). <br /> <br /> ~ER~AS, the United States Coast Guard currently oc- <br />cupies certain land located adjacent to the Elizabeth River <br />(Southern Branch) in the City of Portsmouth in the neighborhood <br />generally kno-~n as Southside~ and <br /> <br /> ~EREAS~ the Coast Guard is expected to terminate <br />its occupancy of said property at such time as the Craney Island <br />Coast Guard Base becomes available for use; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, o~ership and control of the Elizabeth River <br />site would be advantageous to the City of Portsmouth in its ef- <br />forts to control land uses in the Southside co~unlty and would <br />also facilitate redevelopment and conservation efforts being <br />undertaken in this community; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS~ acquisition of this property by the City of <br />Portsmouth has been recommended by the Ports~outh Redevelopment <br />and Housing Authority as a prudent step to be taken in antici- <br />pation of receipt of block grants under the Co~unity Develop- <br />ment Program~ <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the <br />City of Portsmouth, Virginia: <br /> <br /> 1. That it is the sense of this council that the <br />Coast Guard property on the Elizabeth River (Southern Branch) <br />should be conveyed by the United States Government to the City <br />of Portsmouth as soon as practicable after vacation of said <br />property by the Coast Guard. <br /> <br /> 2. That the City Manager be; and he hereby is~ di- <br />rected to forward this resolution dmrectly to appropriate Fed- <br />eral agencies, such resolution to be deemed a formal request <br />to those agencies that the property in question be conveyed to <br />the City of Portsmouth as expeditiously as the interests of <br />the Federal Government will permit~ <br /> <br /> 3. Tha~ the City Manager be~ and he hereby is~ au- <br />thorized and directed to furnish to cognizant Federal agencies <br />any and all appropriate data in support of this request which <br />the agencies may desire or which the City Manager may~ in the <br />exercise of his discretion, deem it prudent to submit. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, at a meeting held October 22, i974~ <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
