A RESOLUTION URGING THE CITIZENS OF PORTSMOUTH AND THE COM- <br />MONWEALTH OF V~RGINIA TO SUPPORT THE $125,000,000. BOND IS- <br />SUE PERTAINING IN PART TO PORT IMPROVEMENTS. <br /> <br /> W~EREAS, the ports have demonstrated the ability to <br />pay for operations and will therefore be of no continuing <br />operating cost to the citizens of Virginia; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the extra capacity at the terminals is need- <br />ed to insure a smooth flow of goods from every part of Vir- <br />ginia's economy through the Ports of Virginia to foreign <br />markets; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the ports affect not only Hampton Roads but <br />economic benefits ripple throughout the state. Approximate- <br />ly, 113,000 people in Virginia hold jobs related to water- <br />borne commerce. Another 142,000 jobs are linked to harbor <br />activity. One in every slx Virginians owes his livelihood <br />to the ports. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the <br />City of Portsmouth, Virginia, that this Council strongly <br />urges the citizens of the City of Portsmouth and the Common- <br />wealth of Virginia to support the $125,000,000. bond issue <br />pertaining in part to port improvements. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be distri- <br />buted to municipal agencies and civic organizations. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouthr Vir- <br />ginla, at a meeting held September 13, 1977. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
