36 <br /> <br />A RESOIff3TION STR~qGLY oPPOSING ~ PROPOSED (~SSATION Off AIRLINE SERVICE <br />BY UNITED AIRLINES TO WASHINGTON NATIONAL A/RPORT AND THE REDUCTION OF <br />AIR SERVICE TO N0t~~OLK i~i,~ATIONAL AIRPORT BY DI~ITED AIRL1/qS~. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS~ United Airlines has proposed cessation of all airline <br />se/~ice %0 Washing%on National Aj_rpor~- frc~ Norfolk international <br />Airport; and <br /> Wii~RFAS, United Airlines has proposed to reduce a~rlmn service <br />frc~ Norfolk International Airport by deleting five flights a day oz <br />a total reduction of 35.7%; and <br /> WHEREAS~ ~he Norfolk International Airport sezc~es as the regional <br /> airport for the ci%ies Of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Port~mouth, Suffo~¢. and <br /> Virginia Beach~ in addition to the areas surrounding same; and <br /> WHEREAS, suCh cities are a national defense center with a great <br /> number of military personnel traveling by air daily; and <br /> ~f~AS~ s-cCh cities are well .~n as tourist centers t~oughou% <br /> the entirety of this country; and <br /> WHEREAS, said cessation and rea~uction is not only ar~ affront but <br /> a serious threat to suCh cities economic existence as well as their <br /> citizen's convenience and general welfare. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Ports- <br /> mouth, Virginia, that the Council vociferously opposes the proposed <br /> unjustified cessation of air service from Norfolk internatiOnal Airport <br /> to Washington National Airport by Uni~ Air~lines~ <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Council also strongly opposes .the <br /> proposed reduction of air service by united Airlines from Ncm~folk <br />.. International Airport. <br /> BE IT FUR]yr~R RESOLVED that.the City At%0rne~ is authorized <br /> join, on .behalf of the City of porhsm~dth, a petition for an <br /> -- ~_nvestiga~C~ in%0 service cu~s proposed by united Airlines. <br /> BE IT ~ RESOLVED that the City Clerk distribute a copy of <br /> - t/ois resolution to the municipal corporations in the Southeastern <br /> Planning District of Virginia; Norfolk Port and Indus%rial Cc~mission; <br /> U. S. Congressional members representing portsmouth; members of <br /> ~nerat Assembly of.
