63 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE CONCERN OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY <br />OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA~ THAT THE RECREATIONAL FACILITIES AT <br />ST. JULIEN'S CREEK ANNEX REMAIN AVAILABLE FOR RECREATIONAL USE. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS~ the citizens of the City of Portsmouth have for <br />many years operated a successful recreational program for over <br />five hundred (500) children annually on 39.2 acres of land that <br />is part of St. Julien's Creek Annex; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, since 1968, the Cradock Little League has constructed <br />baseball and football fields on the site and the recreational area <br />is used for youth baseball and football programs and Portsmouth <br />Catholic High School Soccer games; and <br /> <br /> ~EREAS, the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, has coordinated <br />the activities of the leagues ~nd other groups using this pro- <br />perty and entered into a one (1) year license agreement with the <br />Department of the Navy for the use of said property; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, there is no City-owned site that can accommodate <br />all these facilities; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the continued use of said property is in jeopardy <br />if the property is declared surplus and acquired for industrial <br />development. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Council of the City <br />of Portsmouth, Virginia, that the City Council expresses its <br />interest in the property in order to assure its continued use <br />for recreational purposes. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Clerk be, and she <br />hereby is, directed to forward a certified copy of this Reso- <br />lution to Senator Harry F. Byrd, Jr., Senator John W. Warner, <br />Congressman Robert W. Daniel and the appropriate officials of <br />the Department of the Navy, General Accounting Office~ Com- <br />mission of Outdoor Recreation and the City of Chesapeake. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, <br />at a meeting held July 24, 1979. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
