35 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION ENDORSING THE 1980 CENSUS OF SCHOOL AGE POPULATION; <br />URGING CITIZENS OF PORTSMOUTH TO PARTICIPATE. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the period of March 1 through July 31, 1980, has <br />been designated by the State Department of Education as the <br />official time for conducting the 1980 Census of School Age <br />Population; and <br /> WHEREAS, the census regulations require that each school <br />distric~ count all residents who will have reached their <br />birt~day but not their 20th birthday as of January 1~ 1981~ <br />and handicapped persons who will not have reached their 22nd <br />birthday as of January 1, 1981; and <br /> WHEREAS, the resulting data is used by the Cor~r~onwealth <br /> of Virginia to determine the proportionate share of the State <br /> Sales and Use Tax which shall be returned to each locality <br /> for the purpose of public education; and <br /> WHEREAS, the local share of a State Sales and Use Tax <br /> for the City of Portsmouth is approximately One Hundred Fifty <br /> Dollars ($150.) per year for each eliqible student counted or <br /> approximately Fcur Million Dollars ($%,000,OOO.) per year. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City <br /> of Portsmouth that the Council hereby endorses %he 1980 Census <br /> of School Age Population. <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of <br /> Portsmouth hereby urges all citizens to participate in the <br /> 1980 Census of School Age Population by completing and returnin~ <br /> the census report form as soon as same is received in the mail. <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, <br /> at a meeting held April 22, 1980. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
