32 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE SUPPORT OF THE CITY FOR TR~ <br />CONTINUAL OPERATION OF THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY NORFOLK <br />ASSEMBLY PLANT. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, there is located, in the neighboring City of <br /> Norfolk, Virginia, the Ford Motor Company Norfolk Assembly <br />-Plant which employs'Two Thousandr Three Hundred (2,300) <br /> persons~ including approximately Two Hundred Fifty (250) <br /> reSidents of Portsmouth; and <br /> %~EREAS, it has been reported that the Environmental <br /> Protection Agency ~as placed new restrictions on the operation <br /> of-the Norfolk Assembly Plant to reduce hydrocarbon pollution <br /> caused by painting operations; and <br /> W}IEREASr these new restrictions may result in the <br /> closing of the Forty Five Million ($45,000~000~) Dollar <br /> plant; 5nd <br /> WHEREAS, the closing of a plant of such size will have <br /> an impactl not only on the employees of the plant and the <br /> City of Norfolk, but on the economy of the entire Tidewater <br /> Area including Portsmouth; and <br /> ~q~ER_W~AS, the State Air Pollution Control Board indicates, <br /> and the City Of Portsmouth believes, that the requirements of <br /> the Environmental Protection Agency can be modified to assure <br /> the protection of the'environment while permitting %he con- <br /> tinual operation of the Norfolk Assembly Plant. <br /> ~OW, THE~%EFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Council of the <br /> City'of Portsmouth, that it supports the continual operation <br /> of the Ford MOtor Company Norfolk Assembly Plant under the less <br /> stringent emission standards reco~ended by the State Air <br /> ~ollution Contro~ Board, which will permit the continual operation <br /> of the plant while assuring the protection of the environment. <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution <br /> be for~~arded to .~i1 ~appropriate Federal, State and Municipal <br /> officials and~the FOrd~'M°t°r Company. <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginiaz <br /> at a meeting held April 8, 1980. <br /> Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
