27 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION ENDORSING PRIORITIES OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH <br />FOR ALLOCATION OF FUNDS OF THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS <br />AND TRANSPORTATION. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, a public hearing has been scheduled for March <br />17, 1981, in the Suffolk District Office of the Virginia <br />Depart~ient of Highways and Transportation for the purpose <br />of obtaining recommendations for the priorities in allocation <br />of f~nds of the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation; <br />and <br /> <br /> %~EREAS, the City of Portsmouth is seriously concerned <br />by economic factors which threaten to curtail construction of <br />transportation arterials deemed essential to the future welfare <br />of the City and its port and military related activities; and <br /> <br /> ~,~E~_~EAS, the Council of the City of Portsmouth is of the <br />opinion that local identity of needs for transportation fund- <br />ing should be of primary consideration in establishing the <br />priori%les for allocation of construction funds by the Virginia <br />Department of Highways and Transportation. <br /> <br /> ~JOW, TEEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City <br />of Portsmouth, Virginia, that this Council does hereby endorse <br />the foilo~ng EighJ.~ay Projects and priorities of the Qity of <br />Portsmouth for aXiccation of funds of the Virginia Department <br />of Highways and Transportation: <br /> <br /> i. Development of a traffic artery in the Cross-Churchland <br /> Corridor from the western end of the Virginia Route 164 bridge at <br /> West Norfolk to the vicinity of the intersection of U. S. Route 17 <br /> and Virginia RoUte 135 near a point common to the cities of <br /> Chesapeake, Portsmouth and Suffolk. <br /> <br /> 2. Interstate 264 widening involving the downtown tunnel~ <br /> and Berkley Bridge. <br /> <br /> 3. Victory Boulevard extension from Airline Boulevard <br /> (U.S. 58) to Portsmouth Boulevard (Va. 337). <br /> <br /> 4. Allocation of design funds to design the "Elyway~', <br />a bridge to I~nk Interstate 264 to the Midtown Tunnel Freeway <br />serving the deep water Marine Terminals at Pinner's Point. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Manager be, and he <br />hereby is, authorized to com~unica%e the establishmen~ of these <br />priorities to the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation <br />in such manner as he deems appropriate. <br /> <br /> <br />
