76 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE CONCERN OF THE CITY COUNCIL OVER <br />THE REPEATED REQUESTS FOR INCREASED RATES BY C & P TELEPHONE <br />COMPANY OF VIRGINIA. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company <br />of Virginia (C & P) have petitioned the State Corporation <br />Commission for $77.6 Million Dollar rate increase to take <br />effect on November 10, 1981; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, C & P Telephone has recently been granted 'a <br />rate increase by the State Corporation Commission; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, C & P and other public utilities serving the <br />City of Portsmouth and its consumer/citizens continually <br />request rate increases; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, it is the legal duty of the Attorney General <br />of the Commonwealth of Virginia to represent the consumer/ <br />citizens of Virginia in rate matters; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, it is the legal duty of the staff of the <br />State Corporation Commission to'study and make rate re- <br />commendations to the State Corporation Commission; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, it is the legal duty of the State Corporation <br />Commission to fix fair and just rates for public utilities. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the <br />City of Portsmouth, Virginia, that the Council expresses its <br />concern over the repeated requests for increased rates by <br />public utilities, including C & P, serving the City of Portsmouth <br />and the consumer/citiznes of the City in that such rate in- <br />creases impose unreasonable burdens upon the City and its <br />citizens. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council requests the <br />Attorney General and the staff of the State Corporation Com- <br />mission to study the requests for increased ra~es by public' <br />utilities, including C & P, and to represent the interest of <br />the consu/uer/citizens of the City of Portsmouth and the <br />CoE~onwealth of Virginia. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council requests the <br />State Corporation Commission to weigh the increased financial <br />hardships placed upon the consumer citizens of the City of <br />Portsmouth and the City itself during the deliberation upon <br />such request. <br /> <br /> <br />
