A RESOLUTION EXTENDING THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE COUNCIL <br />OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH TO THE NORFOLK SOUTHERN CORPORATION <br />FOR SELECTING THE TIDEWATER AREA AS ITS CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS. <br /> <br /> ~HEREAS, Norfolk and Western Railway and Southern Railway <br />have merged to become Norfolk Southern Corporation~ and <br /> <br /> ~X~REAS, the formation of this single rail system will <br />create a rail network extending across twenty~one states <br />and consisting of 31,000 miles of track with 4,260 employees <br />incl~ding 1,600 in the Tidewater area; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, this merger will facilitate improved rail <br />service thereby increasing freight traffic and better oppor- <br />tunities and benefits for shippers and the public at iarg~; <br />and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the location of the corporate headquarters of <br />the Norfolk Southern Corporation in the City of Norfolk wilt <br />inspire economic growth there and in other Tidewater cities <br />including Portsmout-h. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of <br />the City of Portsmouth would like to extend its congratulations <br />to Norfolk Southern Corporation for selecting the Tidewater <br />area as the location for its corpora.re headqnarters and <br />wishes it much success in this endeavor. <br /> <br /> BE IT FDiRTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk be, and she <br />hereby is; directed to forward copies of this resolution <br />to the appropriate officials of the Norfolk Southern Corporation. <br /> <br /> AdQpted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, at a meeting held May 25, 1982. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
