110 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION RENAMING AND DESIGNATING THE MT. HERMON RECREA- <br />TIONAL FACILITY AS THE JOSEPH E. PARKER, SR. CO~4UNITY CENTER. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, on the 16th day of April, 1983, death brought <br />to a close the active life of Joseph E. Parker,*Sr., a native <br />of Portsmouth, who dedicated his life in exemplary service to <br />promote the development of improved conditions for the citizens <br />of the City of Portsmouth and, specifically, the Mt. Hermon <br />conu~nity; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Joseph E. Parker, Sr. devoted nume~s hours <br />of time and effort and lent his considerable t~ents to the <br />task to be performed on many boards and commiss~0ns of'the <br />City of Portsmouth; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the stature he attained in the community by <br />his exemplary life and monumental achievements were well <br />recognized and he~ his -~ife Alice, and their seven children <br />have all demonstrated an ~dnselfish community spirit in de- <br />voting their efforts for the benefit of their neighbors and <br />the conu~.3anity; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS~ the community has suffered a great loss in the <br />passing of Joseph E. Parker, Sr., a loss - ~hich was well <br />recognized by this Council in the adoption of a resolution <br />on May !0, 1983; and <br /> <br /> WI~RF~AS~ th±s Council had previously recognized the <br />achievements of Joseph E. Parker by designating the gymnasium <br />portion of the recreational facility in the Mt. Hermon Re- <br />development Project as the Joseph E. Parker, Sr. gymnasium; <br />and ~ <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, it was his guidance as a leader of the community <br />that caused significant strides in the total rebuilding of <br />Mt. Hermon through extensive housing and community revitalization <br />efforts and the construction of the recreational facility. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the <br />City of Portsmouth, Virginia that the appreciation of this <br />Council and the citizens of the City of Portsmouth for <br />· Joseph E. Parker, Sr. may best be demonstrated by renaming <br />the Mt. ~ermon recreational facility and designating same as <br />the Joseph E. Parker, Sr. Community Center. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk be, and she <br />hereby is, ~nstructed to forward a copy of bhis resolution <br />to his wife, Alice B. Parker, in recognition of his service <br />and respected stature in this community. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, <br />at a meeting held November 8, 1983. <br /> <br />Teste: <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
