98 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING ~HE USS AMERICA AND ITS COMMANDING <br />OFFICER AND CREW FOR THE SERVICES RENDERED TO THE CITY AND <br />ITS CITIZENS. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, <br />recognizes and acknowledges that the USS America is an import- <br />ant element of our natibnal defense, and without any further <br />contribution ~ould be v~orthy of recognition; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS~ while the USS ~erica was undergoing a four <br />month overhaul at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard ~in Portsmouth, <br />the C3_ty an~ Captain D. _. S~nwaao, the CorJna~ding Officer, <br />jointly announced that as a gesture of good will, the crew <br />of the USS ~J~erica ~ouid assist the City in a cleanup <br />project for City Park; and <br /> <br /> ~HEREAS~ the Quality of Life Conunittee for the USS <br />America obtained volunteers from the 2700 man crew, and <br />at the rate of 30 crew members per day, assisted the City <br />in painting picnic shelters, the pro shop, picnic tables, <br />trash cans, fencing and signs~ and cleared low hanging <br />branches and brush aiio%~ging a clear view of the Elizabeth <br />River for visitors to City Park; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, in addition thereto, the USS America's Dental <br />Officers started a Dental Awareness Program in the Junior <br />High Schools allowing 7th grade students to participate in <br />an interesting and creative forum; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, volunteers from the crew initiated work pro- <br />]ects to assist the operation of Holiday House located in <br />the Westhaven section of our City; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, selected menf0ers of the crew repaired the <br />United Way Campaign banner and a volunteer projectionist <br />offered his services to show the United Way Campaign film <br />on over a dozen occasions; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Portsmouth has received over $20,000 <br />in labor as a result of this endeavor and, more importantly, <br />developed a warm appreciation for the crew of the USS America <br />as representatives of "Our Navy". <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the <br />City of Portsmouth recognizes the services performed by the <br />crew of the USS ~erica and extends its appreciation to Captain <br />D. T. Schwaab and those members of the crew who participated <br />for the services rendered to our ~ity and its citizens. <br /> <br /> <br />
