Section 2-13. Le~l"~Holidays Generally. <br /> <br /> The following days are designated as legal holidays for <br />all employees of the City, except policemen and firefighters <br />and those engaged l~ such employment as necessarily requires <br />their daily services, and for all State officers performing <br />duties for the City: <br /> <br />1. The 1st day of January - New Years Day; <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />The 3rd Monday in January Lee-Jackson-King Day to <br />honor Robert Edward Lee (1806-1870), Thomas Jonathan <br />(Stonewall) Jackson (1824-1863), and Martin Luther <br />King, Jr. (1.929-1968), defenders of causes; <br /> <br />The 3rd monday in February - George Washington Day <br />to honor George Washington (17~32-1799), the 1st <br />President of the United States of America; <br /> <br />o <br /> <br />The last Monday in May - Memorial Day to honor all, <br />persons who made the supreme sacrafice in giving <br />their lives mn defense of Virginia and the United <br />States of America; <br /> <br />The 4th day of July - Independence Day to honor the <br />signing of the Declaration of Independence; <br /> <br />The 1st Monday mn September - Labor Day to honor all <br />people who work for a livelihood in Virginia and the <br />United States of America; <br /> <br />The llth day of November - Veteran's Day to honor <br />all persons who served in the Armed Forces of Virginia <br />and the United States of America; <br /> <br />The 4th Thursday in November - Thanksgiving Day to <br />honor and give thanks in each person's own manner for <br />the blessings bestowed upon the people of Virginia <br />and honoring the first Thanksgiving in 1619; <br /> <br />9. The 25th day of December -'Christmas Day. <br /> <br /> Provided, however, that whenever any of the aforesaid <br />holidays shall fall on a Saturday they shall be observed on the <br />preceding Friday, and whenever they shall fall on a Sunday they <br />shall be observed ~n the following Monday. No other holidays <br />shall be observed by either State employees partly engaged in <br />City work or by City employees except when special occasions <br />are authorized by the City Manager. <br /> <br /> <br />
