3 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION EXTENDING CONGRATULATIONS OF THE COUNCIL~D <br />CITIZENS OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH TO THE COUNCIL AND CITIZENS <br />OF THE CITY. 0F SUFFOLK ON THE OCCASION ~LAP~KING THE 10TH A~NNI- <br />YE~SARY OF THE CONSOLIDATED CITY OF SUFFOLK. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the consolidated City of Suffolk was established <br />in January 1974 by the merging of the City of Nansemond <br />(formerly the County of Nansemond and the to~ns of Holland <br />and Wha!eyville) and the City of Suffolk; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Portsmouth and the areas now con- <br />stituting the City of SuffOlk have, since colonial times, <br />been geographically, culturally and commercially related . <br />while still developing an individual sense of community pride; <br />and <br /> <br /> SfHEREAS, the joint efforts of neighboring cities, as <br />exemplified by.the mutually agreed to Comprehensive Water <br />Agreement of 1982, are necessary in order to imorove the <br />quality of life for the citizens of both cities; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Portsmouth recognizes <br />the efforts of the Council and the citizens of the City of <br />Suffolk to improve the quality of life within their city and <br />thus have a positive impact on its neighboring cities and the <br />region as a whole. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the <br />City of Portsmouth that this Council, on behalf of the <br />citizens of the City of Portsmouth, extend to the Council <br />of the City of Suffolk and the citizens of that City their <br />congratulations on the occasion marking the 10th anniversary <br />of the establishment of the consolidated City of Suffolk. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be spread <br />upon the minutes of the Council of this City, and that a <br />copy thereof be presented on behalf of the City of Portsmouth <br />to the Council of the City of Suffolk. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia <br />at a meeting held January 10, 1984. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
