A RESOLUTION WHEREAS, James A. Overton, a native of Norfolk County, Virginia, and a graduate of the Portsmouth Public School System, has served, and continues to serve, the residents of the City of Portsmouth and the Commonwealth of Virginia as a practicing attorney since 1950, and substitute judge of the General District Court of this City since 1972; and WHEREAS, he has given generously of his time and energy in the ~nterest of the citizens of this City whose interest he held pararaount at all times; and WHEREAS, he has served the City and its citizens as a City Council appointee to membership on the Portsmouth Redevelopment and 5ousing Authority, Portsmouth Planning Commission and the Portsmouth Clean Community Commission; and WHEREAS, he has served in leadership positions for the Central Civic Forum, Boy Scouts ofiAmerica, Twin City Bar Association, Grove Baptist Church, Effingham Street YMCA, Douglas Park PTA, W~llfam E. Waters PTA, Urban League of Tidewater, Pan-Hellenic Council, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Virginia Union University and Child and Family Services Board; and WHEREAS, he has served with distinction and helped to make the C±ty of Portsmouth a better place in which to tire; and WHEREAS, his exemplary recognized. the stature he attained in the community by life and monumental achievements are well NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council recognizes and commends James A. Overton for his dedicated service to the City of Portsmouth and wishes him much success in the future. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a, copy of this resolution be spread upon the minutes of the ~ity Council, and further that a copy be presented to James A. Overton at a Tribute in his honor to be held March 17, 1984. Adopted by the Council of the, City of Portsmouth, Virginia, at a meeting held March 113, 1984. Teste: City Clerk
