or utilized for ~he 'prlnclpal pu_r~.ose.~ o~ .s~ppl~ng-~esuscl~atl n <br />or emergency relief where 'h~man l!fe is endangered when.such <br />vehicle is being used in the performance of public service, <br />and when such vehicle is operated unde~ emergency conditions, <br />may, witkout'subjecting himself to criminal prosecution: <br /> ~1) Proceed past red signal~ light,' stop sign or device <br /> indicating moving traffic shall stop if the. speed and movement <br /> of the vehicle is reduced and controlled so that it can.~pass <br /> a signal, light or device with due regard to the safety of <br /> persons and property. <br /> (2) Park or stand notwithstanding the provisions'of this' ~ <br /> Chapter. <br /> (3) Disregard regulations governing a direction of move- <br /> ment of vehicles turning in specified directions so lo~ as <br /> the operator does not endanger life or.property. .~ <br /> (4) Pass or overtake, with due regard to the safety of <br /> persons and property, another vehicle at any intersection.' <br /> (.5) Pass or overtake with due regard to the safety~ of <br /> persons and property, while enroute to an emergency, other <br /> stopped or slow'moving vehicles, by going off'the paved or <br /> main traveled portion of the roadway on the right. .Notwith- <br /> standing subsection (b) hereof, vehicles exempted in this <br /> instance will not be required to sound a siren or any device <br /> to give automatically intermittent signals. <br /> (b)' These exemptions, hereinbefore granted to such <br /> moving vehicle, shall apply only w~en the operato~ of. Such <br /> ~ · · ' or alternating red <br /> vehicle displays a flashing, blinking <br /> light ~r red and white lights and sounds a siren, exhaust <br /> whistle, or air horn des~gne to give automatically inter- <br /> mittent signals, as may be reasonably necessary, and, only <br /> when there is in force and effect for such vehicle elt~er'(i) <br /> standard automobile liability insurance covering injury or <br /> death to any person in the sum of at least one hundred thousand <br /> dollars (.$100,000] because of bodily injury to or death'of one <br /> person in any one accident and, subj'ect to the limit' for one <br /> person, to a limit of three hundred thousand dollars ($300,000) <br /> because of bodily injury to or death of two or more persons <br /> in any one accident, and to.a t!m~t of ten thousand dollars <br /> fSi0,000) because of injury to or destruction of property: of_ <br /> others in any one accident or ~f~i) a certificate of self- <br /> insurance issued pursuant-to §46.395 of the Code of Virginia. <br /> 'Such exemptions shall not~ howe~er, protect the operator of <br /> any such vehicle from criminal prose6ution for conduct con- <br /> stituting reckless disregard of th9 safety of persons and <br /> <br /> <br />
