fire department and it shall be his duty to supervise and <br />direct the work of assistant inspectors of said bureau when <br />authorized by the city manager and by appropriate inspections <br />to enforce all state laws and city ordinances relating to the <br />prevention of fires, the storage and use of explosives and <br />inflammables, the installation and maintenance of fire <br />extinguishing equipment, the maintenance, regulation, <br />location and construction of fire escapes, the means and <br />adequacy of exits in case of fire, panic or accidents from <br />factories, apartment houses, schools, lodginghouses, asylums, <br />hospitals, churches, halls, theaters, amphitheaters and all <br />other places in which a number of persons work, live or <br />congregate from time to time for any purpose and the <br />investigation of the cause, origin and circumstances of <br />fires. In addition he shall have such other powers and <br />perform such other duties incident to his office as are set <br />forth in this division or the ordinances of the city or as <br />may be conferred or imposed upon him from time to time by <br />law. <br /> <br />SECTION i2-45: FIRE ESCAPE DEVICES. <br /> <br /> The chief inspector of the bureau of fire prevention <br />shall approve all fire escapes, relative to construction, <br />location, change in construction, location and maintenance of <br />the same, and of all exits leading to fire escapes and of all <br />signs and emergency lights connected with any means of egress <br />from any building, structure or place. No person shall have <br />placed, or caused to be placed on any building within the <br />limits of the city, any fire escape or fire escape devices, <br />except outside stairways, unless the same has the approval of <br />the chief inspector of the bureau of fire prevention. <br /> <br />SECTION 12-46: REPEALED. <br /> <br />SECTION 12-47: REPEALED. <br /> <br /> That this ordinance shall be in effect from the date of <br />its adoption. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, at a meeting held July 8, 1986. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br />10 <br /> <br /> <br />
