A RESOLUTION ENDORSING THE CONCEPT OF CREATING A NEW <br />PORTSMOUTH HISTORY MUSEUM TO BE NAMED THE USS <br />MONITOR--MERRIMACK (CSS VIRGINIA) MUSEUM; AUTHORIZING THE <br />CITY MANAGER TO MAKE APPLICATION TO THE NATIONAL OCEAN <br />AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION TO HOUSE THE ARTIFACTS <br />FROM THE USS MONITOR IN THE NEW PORTSMOUTH HISTORY <br />MUSEUM. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Portsmouth Museum and Fine Arts <br />Commission has recommended that a new Portsmouth History <br />Muse~ commemorate the battle of the USS MONITOR and the <br />MERRIMACK (CSS VIRGINIA) a local event which has <br />historic significance in world history; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the National Ocean and Atmospheric <br />Administration will, in the near future, be accepting <br />proposals for housing the artifacts of the USS MONITOR <br />which are to be removed from the Atlantic Ocean; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, artifacts from the MERRIMAC (CSS VIRGINIA) <br />are also available in the local area. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of <br />the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, that it hereby <br />endorses the concept of creating a new Portsmouth <br />History Museum to be named USS MONITOR-MERRIMACK (CSS <br />VIRGINIA MUSEUM. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Manager be, <br />and he hereby is, authorized to make application to the <br />National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration to house <br />the artifacts from the USS MONITOR in the new Portsmouth <br />~istory Museum. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, at a meeting held January 14, 1986. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
