A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE OPPOSITION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH TO THE EXPANSION OR PROLONGATION OF THE USE OF CRANEY ISLAND AS A DISPOSAL AREA. 73 WHEREAS, the Army Corps of Engineers has served notice that in cooperation with the Virginia Port Authority, it will conduct a study to develop an environmentally and politically acceptable, technically feasible, and economical long term plan for the disposal of dredged materials from the Inner-Harbo~ area of Hampton Roads; and WHEREAS, alternative plans which are under consideration include the expansion of Craney Island as a disposal area; and WHEREAS, Craney Island is within the boundaries of the City of Portsmouth and its ultimate development is vital no the economic vitality of the City of Portsmouth and the Commonwealth of Virginia; and WHEREAS~ the Council steadfastly expressed by expansion or unnecessary disposal area. of the City of Portsmouth has resolution its opposition to the prolongation of the Craney Island NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia that it steadfastly reiterates its opposition to the expansion or unnecessary prolongation of the use of Craney Island as a disposal area and expresses its intention to enunciate its position at such time and in such forums as appropriate. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Manager and City Attorney are directed to monitor'the study with full authority to take whatever steps are necessary to express the Council's position at such time and in such forums as they deem appropriate and that the City Clerk be, and she hereby is, directed to forward copies of this Resolution to the ~appropriate authorities.
