47 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION CHANGING THE NAME OF THE "MAYOR'S COMMITTEE ON <br />THE HANDICAPPED" TO THE MAYOR'S COMMITTEE FOR PERSONS WITH <br />DISABILITIES. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, by resolutions adopted by the Council of the <br />City of Portsmouth, Virginia, on July 27, 1987 and November <br />22, 1987, the "Mayor's Committee on the Handicapped" was <br />created for the purpose of advising and informing the public <br />and private sectors of the City of Portsmouth and environs of <br />the problems facing handicapped persons; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Committee has advised the Mayor and City <br />Council that it appears that the term "handicapped" has <br />developed a negative connotation and requested that the <br />Committee be renamed. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City <br />of Portsmouth, Virginia that this committee be and the same <br />hereby is hereafter known as the "Mayor's Committee for <br />Persons with Disabilities" and that this committee shall <br />continue to fulfill the same function and purpose as <br />previously set forth by Resolutions of this Council. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, at a meeting held July 11, 1989. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
