AN ORDINANCE TO ~4END ORDINANCE NO. 1977-142 ESTABLISHING THE <br />MAYOR'S SISTER CITIES COMMISSION FROM THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Portsmouth recognizes <br />the material benefit that this Commission has had since its <br />creation on October 11, 1977 in promoting cultural ties and <br />harmony with other cities and encouraging educational programs <br />in order that the citizens of Portsmouth may learn about our <br />Sister Cities. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City <br />of Portsmouth, Virginia, that the Mayor is authorized to <br />expand the size of the Commission to be known as the Mayor's <br />Sister Sisters Commission from the City of Portsmouth". Such <br />Commission shall have twenty members to be appointed to serve <br />terms of three years, except that the members appointed on or <br />before June 1, 1988 will have their terms as commission <br />members expire on June 1, 1991, but those appointed after June <br />1, 1988 shall serve for a 3 year term. Such members shall be <br />residents of the City of Portsmouth. Appointment of such <br />members shall be based upon recommendations solicited from the <br />various civic gr6ups within the City of Portsmouth as well as <br />from individual citizens of the City. <br /> <br /> The Commission so appointed is authorized and instructed <br />to work towards the purpose of promoting cultural ties and <br />harmony with other sister cities. The Commission is further <br />authorized to establish and promote educational programs for <br />the citizens of Portsmouth in order that the citizens may more <br />fully participate in such program and achi6ve the full <br />benefits from such program. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, at a meeting held July 11, 1989. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
