21 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION HONORING THAT AGELESS WARRIOR, THE U.S.S. CORAL <br />SEA, UPON ITS DECOMMISSIONING. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the U.S.S. Coral Sea was named in commemoration <br />of the battle of Coral Sea, which was fought in May of 1942, <br />the first major engagement in Naval history where opposing <br />ships did not exchange a single shot, because Naval Aviation <br />had become the main form of armament, and which battle was the <br />turning point in the war with Japan; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the U.S.S. Coral Sea was constructed at Newport <br />News, Virginia, and after commissioning in October of 1947, <br />was fitted out at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, <br />Virginia; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, in the ensuing years, the U.S.S. Coral Sea has <br />been modernized and has made numerous deployments including <br />five combat deployments in support of operations against North <br />Vietnam and two around the world cruises; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the U.S.S. Coral Sea has lived up to its motto <br />"The Best In The World" earning three Battle "E" Awards as the <br />top carrier in the Pacific Fleet and two Flatley Awards as the <br />safest carrier in the United States Navy and served with <br />distinction in the Maye~uez incident; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, in September of 1983, the U.S.S. Coral Sea <br />returned to the place of her birth to commence a complex <br />overhaul and modernization designed to make "The Ageless <br />Warrior" a viable and potent war fighter, and in the words of <br />John Lehman, the Secretary of the Navy, "to command the <br />respect of friend and foe as she extends her distinguished <br />career;" and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Department of Navy will decommission the <br />U.S.S. Coral Sea on April 30, 1990. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City <br />of Portsmouth, Virginia, that the Council hereby extends its <br />congratulations to the U.S.S. Coral Sea and to all of its <br />officers and men who have served on "The Ageless Warrior" <br />throughout the decades, for their dedication to duty in the <br />defense of our Nation. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, at a meeting held April 24, 1990. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
