62 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF NOAH E. "MIKE" <br />WILLIAMS, JR. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Noah E. "Mike" Williams, Jr., a native of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia, started his career in photo journalism <br />as an apprentice photographer for his hometown newspaper The <br />Portsmouth Star in August of 1947; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Mike Williams furthered his professional <br />development as a photographer for The Virginian-Pilot but <br />returned to The Portsmouth Star in 1953 where he ran the <br />engraving and photo department for The Portsmouth Star until <br />1955 when The Portsmouth Star was acquired by The <br />Virginian-Pilot and he was placed in charge of the photo <br />department in Portsmouth; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Mike Williams was named "Photographer of the <br />YearN by the Virginia Press Photographers Association and he <br />has won the Slover Award three times, in addition to many <br />Virginia Press Association and Southern Short Course awards <br />his illustrious 44 year career; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Mike Williams' skill as a photo journalist <br />as an observer of life has been so appreciated that his <br />photographs have been published all over the country and <br />several have been featured in Life Magazine; and <br /> <br />and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the stature he b~s attained in this community by <br />~'his exemplary life and monumental achievements as a <br /> chronicler of photographic history are well recognized. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City <br />of Portsmouth, Virginia, that this resolution is spread upon <br />the minutes of the Council and that a copy thereof be <br />presented to Noah E. "Mike" Williams, Jr. in recognition of <br />his service to and respected stature in this community. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, at a meeting held November 12, 1991. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
