51 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF COMMONWEALTH RAILWAY PROJECTS IN <br />THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Commonwealth Railway desires to file an <br />application with the Virginia Department of Transportation for <br />safety and improvement pro3ects; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Commonwealth Railway has identified 3.5 <br />miles of track rehabilitation, and grade crossing and drainage <br />improvement projects; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the 1990 General Assembly, through enactment of <br />an amendment to House Bill 30, provided funding for the <br />acquisition, lease or improvement of railways within the Rail <br />Industrial Access Program budget; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Commonwealth Railway is an important element <br />of the City of Portsmouth's transportation system; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Commonwealth Railway is instrumental in the <br />economic development of the City of Portsmouth and provides <br />relief to the highway system by transporting freight, and <br />provides an alternate means of transporting commodities; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Portsmouth supports the project and <br />the retention of the rail service; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Commonwealth Transportation Board has <br />established procedures for all allocation and distribution <br />the funds provided by House Bill 30. <br /> <br />of <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City <br />of Portsmouth, Virginia, that the City of Portsmouth does <br />hereby request the Virginia Department of Transportation to <br />give priority consideration to the projects proposed by the <br />Commonwealth Railway totaling $98,611.00 in the City of <br />Portsmouth, and that the City Clerk send a copy of this <br />Resolution to the Virginia Department of Transportation. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, at a meeting held September 10, 1991. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
