ARTICLE VI. DESIGN STANDARDS FOR <br /> <br />PARKING AND LOADING AREAS, BUFFERS & LANDSCAPING <br /> <br />Sec. 40-70. Applicability. <br /> <br /> Where any parking areas, off-street loading areas or landscaping according to <br />specifications of a Landscaping Group are required by this Chapter or are included <br />as a condition of any permit or approval granted under this Chapter, the standards <br />contained in this Article shall be met. The standards for design, construction and <br />improvement of parking areas shall apply in all zoning districts to any development <br />where four (4) or more parking spaces are required. <br /> <br />Sec. 40-71. St-ndards for design of parking and lo~ding areas. <br /> All parking areas required by this Chapter shall be designed, constructed and <br />maintained in accordance with the terms of this Article and with the terms of <br />standards for driveways and parking areas, published by the city engineer. Any <br />unauthorized conversion or removal of a required parking area shall be a violation <br />of this Chapter. <br /> <br />Sec. 40-71.1. Desilsn and dimensional ~equirements for parking lots. <br /> <br /> In all zoning districts, except Historic Districts as noted in Section 40-52.4, where <br />four (4) or more off-street parking spaces are permitted or required, the following <br />design and construction standards shall apply, subject to waiver of a single <br />dimensional requirement by the city engineer, in proper cases involving public <br />safety or demonstrable hardship. <br /> <br />(a) <br /> <br />Each parking space shall be at least nine (9) feet wide and eighteen (18) <br />feet long, except that in parking areas containing more than ten (10) <br />spaces, with the agreement of the traffic engineer, a maximum of thirty <br />percent (30%) of the spaces may be for compact cars. The compact ear <br />spaces shall be at least eight (8) feet wide and sixteen (16) feet long. No <br />part of any parking space required by this section shall extend over any <br />public way or cause an automobile parked in such a space to overhang a <br />public way; <br /> <br />(b) <br /> <br />Access aisles in parking areas shall be at least eighteen (18) feet wide if the <br />parking spaces are at a sixty (60) degree angle or less to the aisles and at <br />least twenty-four (24) feet wide if the parking spaces are at a uinty (90) <br />degree angle (or any angle greater than sixty (60) degrees) to the aisles; <br /> <br />(c) <br /> <br />In any parking area there shall be a minimum of one (1) handicapped <br />parking space. T here shall be one (1) additional handicapped parking space <br />for each fifty parking spaces after the first parking space. Handicapped <br />parking spaces shall be thirteen (13) feet wide. Handicapped parking <br />spaces shall be those spaces nearest the main entrance or most convenient <br />to the main entrance for wheelchair access.
