24 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE CLOSING OF THE NAVAL AVIATION <br />(NADEP) IN NORFOLK, VIRGINIA. <br /> <br />DEPOT <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the United States Government is in the process <br />of reducing the size Df its military operations; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, such reduction involves the closing of several <br />military installations, bases and depots including the Naval <br />Aviation Depot (NADEP) located in Norfolk, Virginia; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, NADE? is <br />United States employing <br />percent of whom reside <br /> <br />the largest Naval Aviation Depot in <br />approximately 4,400 persons, nine <br />in the City of Portsmouth; and <br /> <br />the <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the closing of NADEP will cause its employees to <br />lose their jobs which may ultimately cause many of them to <br />relocate; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, such closing of NADEP will have a negative <br />impact on Portsmouth's businesses, school enrollment, programs <br />and other services; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, ~Ja_e closing of NADEP will also cause the City of <br />Portsmouth to lose local revenues in the amount of 14.5 <br />million dollars which would severely affect the City's local <br />tax base. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City <br />of Portsmouth, Virginia, that it is opposed to the closing of <br />the Naval Aviation Depot (NADEP) located in Norfolk, Virginia~ <br />and requests that NADEP be removed from the United States <br />Government's list of facilities to be closed. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk be and is <br />hereby directed to send a copy of nhis resolution to the <br />President of the United States, Portsmouth's Representatives <br />in the Congress of the United States, and to all appropriate <br />federal authorities, representatives, and elected officials. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of <br />Virginia, at a meeting held March 23, 1993. <br /> <br />Portsmouth, <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
