30 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OPPOSING ANY CONSIDERATION OF THE CLOSING OF THE <br />NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD IN PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, che Norfolk Naval Shipyard has operated <br />continuously since 1767 in Portsmouth, Virginia; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Norfolk <br />our nation's security and <br />expeditious repair of the <br /> <br />Naval Shipyard has contributed <br />defense by its efficient and <br />country's naval vessels; and <br /> <br />to <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Norfolk Naval Shipyard also has a major <br />economic impact on Hampton Roads in general and the City of <br />Portsmouth in particular, as an employer of nearly 10,000 <br />highly qualified civilian and 150 military employees; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Norfolk Naval Shipyard has been added by the <br />Defense Base Closure and Realignment CommissIon to the list of <br />government installations to be considered for closing; and <br /> <br /> WI{EREAS, the proposed closure of the Norfolk Naval <br />Shipyard would have a devastating effect on the nation's <br />ability to repair speedily its vessels in time of national <br />crisis; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the proposed closure of the Norfolk Naval <br />Shipyard would also seriously undermine the economies of all <br />Hampton Roads cities, in particular the City of Portsmouth <br />which is already comprised of almost 60% tax exempt land. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City <br />of Portsmouth, Virginia, that it strongly opposes~any proposal <br />to close the Norfolk Naval Shipyard on the grounds that a <br />closure would be seriously adverse to our nation's best <br />interests, as well as chose of the City of Portsmouth and the <br />other Hampton Roads cities. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk be directed to <br />forward a copy of this resolution to all Virginia <br />congressional representatives, to the Governor of the <br />Commonwealth of Virginia, and to the Virginia General Assembly <br />representatives of all of the Hampton Roads cities. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, at a meeting held May 25, 1993. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
