AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND CHAPTER 22 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF <br />PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, 1988, BY AMENDING SECTIONS 22-1, <br />22-7(b), 22-316, 22-328Ib) AND (c), 22-396(a), 22-423, AND <br />22-426(a), (b), AND (c), AND BY ENACTING A NEW SECTION <br />22-366.1 THEREOF, PERTAINING TO THE OPERATION OF MOTOR <br />VEHICLES. <br /> <br /> BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia: <br /> <br /> 1. That Sections 22-1, 22-7(b), 22-316, 22-328[b) and <br />(c), 22-396(a), 22-423, and 22-426(a), (b) and (c), of the <br />Code of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, be amended to <br />be reordained and read as follows: <br /> <br />Section 22-1. <br /> <br />Definitions. <br /> <br /> The words and phrases used in this chapter shall, for <br />the purposes of this chapter, have the meanings <br />respectively ascribed to them in Section 46.2-100 of the <br />Code of Virginia as in effect on July 1, 1993, and any <br />subsequent amendments thereto, except in those instances <br />where the context clearly indicates a different meaning. <br /> <br />Section 22-7. <br /> <br />Driver improvement program. <br /> <br /> (b) In lieu of or in addition to the penalties <br />prescribed, any person found guilty of violation of any of <br />the provisions of this chapter may be required by any court <br />in the city to attend the city driver improvement program, <br />which shall consist of ten (10) hours of instruction to be <br />provided by sworn police officers or certified defensive <br />driver instructors, or any traffic school that has been <br />established in the county or city where the person is a <br />resident or in any jurisdiction contiguous to the county or <br />city of residence of the convicted violator for a period <br />specified in the order requiring attendance if the <br />governing body of that contiguous jurisdiction consents <br />thereto. <br /> <br />Section 22-316. <br /> <br />Duty of drivers upon approach of <br />emergency vehicles. <br /> <br /> (a) Upon the approach of any vehicle listed in <br />subsection (a) of section 22-11 Giving audible signal by <br />siren, exhaust whistle, air horn designed to Give <br />automatically intermittent signals, and displayinG a <br />flashing, blinking or alternating emergency light or <br />lights, the driver of every other vehicle shall, as quickly <br /> <br /> <br />
