Potable water connections to boilers shall be made through an air <br />gap or provided with an approved backflow preventer. Potable water <br />by-pass arrangements on boilers shall be protected by a backflow <br />preventer. If continuous service is required, two (2) backflow <br />preventers of the same type may be installed in parallel. Systems <br />containing chemicals shall be protected with an air gap or a <br />reduced pressure principle backflow preventer. <br /> <br /> 6. That Section 38-173 of the Code of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, 1988 be amended to read as follows: <br /> <br />Section 38-173. Potable connections to refrigerating units, etc. <br /> <br /> Potable water inlet connections to refrigerating unit condensers, <br />cooling jackets, heat exchangers and air-conditioning cooling <br />systems will be air gapped or provided with an approved backflow <br />preventer. Systems containing chemicals shall be protected with an <br />air gap or a reduced pressure principle backflow preventer. <br /> <br /> 7. That Section 38-!7~(a) of the Code of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia, 1988, be amended to read as follows: <br /> <br />Section 38-174. Protective devices for fire service systems. <br /> <br /> (a) Fire service systems having direct connections from <br />waterworks with no pumps or storage facilities, no fire department <br />pumper connections, no connections to other water supplies, no <br />antifreeze o__r chemicals added to the fire system, and all sprinkler <br />heads discharging to the atmosphere are not required to have <br />positive protective devices. <br /> <br /> 8. That Section 38-179(c) (1) of the Code of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia, 1988, be amended to read as follows: <br /> <br />Section 38-179. Containment Policy. <br /> <br />(c) Conditions requiring backflow prevention devices. A backflow <br />prevention device shall be installed at each service connection <br />to a consumer's water system serving premises where any of the <br />following conditions exist: <br /> <br /> (1) Premises on which any substance is handled in such a <br /> manner as to create an actual or potential hazard to a <br /> waterworks. This shall include premises having sources or <br /> systems containing process fluids or waters originating from <br /> a waterworks which are no longer under the control of the <br /> director. <br /> <br /> 9. That Section 38-181 of the Code of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, 1988, be amended to read as follows: <br /> <br /> <br />
