AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND CHAPTER 17 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF <br />PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA (1988) BY AMENDING SECTION 17'1{b) <br />THEREOF, PERTAINING TO DANGEROUS BUILDINGS. <br /> <br /> BE IT ORDAINED by the COuncil of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia: <br /> <br /> !. That Section 17-1(b) of the Code of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia (1988) be amended and reordained to read <br />as follows: <br /> <br />Sec. 17-1. Dangerous buildings. <br /> <br /> (b) Whenever the code official shall find any structure, <br />house or dwelling place or portion thereof to be unsafe as <br />defined in subsection (a) of this section, he shall give the <br />owner, agent for the owner or person in control of such <br />building or structure, and lien holder in control of such <br />building or structure, written notice. This notice shall <br />require the owner, agent for the owner or person in control of <br />such building within a stated time to complete improvements or <br />demolish or remove the building, structure or portion thereof. <br />For purposes of this section, written notice shall be mailed by <br />certified or registered mail, return receipt requested, sent to <br />the last known address of the property owner and published in a <br />newspaper having general circulation in the City in accordance <br />with the applicable provisions of Section 15.1-504 of the Code <br />of Virginia, 1950, as amended. No action shall be taken by the <br />code official to remove, repair or secure any building, wall or <br />other structure for at least thirty (30) days following the <br />later of the return of the receipt or newspaper publication. <br /> <br /> 2.
